Het afscheid dat blijft.

Documentary in loving memory of Emma Reynders

Four students from Thomas More Hogeschool created a pilot episode titled The Farewell That Remains as part of their bachelor project.

I was invited as an artist to create the visuals through painting, which were later digitally edited by the students.

The story is connected to the tragic bus accident in Sierre in 2012, involving a Belgian school group. The accident deeply affected many families and communities, and remains a moment of collective grief.

Through these five paintings, I tried to keep her memory alive, while also reflecting the different phases her father went through, from losing her to knowing she will always be with him.

Emma

“Emma was a girl who brought colour wherever she went. She was full of love, joy and energy.”

The painting of a girl seen from above, spinning around, spreading colours filled with joy.

Her hair forms the symbol of infinity, showing the lasting impact she made on everyone she met and the memory of her that will always remain.

Phases of grief

In these paintings, I searched for a visual language for the different phases Tony went through.

From total darkness and feeling lost, to finding strength and meaning in what happened, and finally trying to find peace again.

The pain (the clouds) will always remain, but in time there will be space again to let the sun come through..

Return to the light
